The metal component parts of a pen are usually made of brass that is plated by various methods with a finish metal. These components include the finial, clip, center band and nib section. The finish metals are available in a wide range of types and durability. There are a lot of options out there used by pen component makers and the quality varies considerably from one to the other. Creations-N-Wood offers metal finish options to compliment your new handmade pen. I try to only choose the best available finishes from the many manufacturers. In order to offer pens at different price points, the metal plating will vary in quality. Less expensive pens will have a thinner plating layer while my higher priced pens will be finished with a jewelry-grade precious metal finish. Below is a brief explanation about the metal finishes and their durability.
Creating One Unique Item At A Time
Each type of plating has a wear resistance rating that indicates the durability and longevity of the plating. A 2 to 3 check rating represents pens currently on today's market that are flash plated, or in other words the plating is thin, protected by a layer of epoxy, and will not wear as well as higher rated finishes. A 5 check rating indicates the plating thickness and durability is such that it will not wear off at any time for any reason. This grade of plating is typically used on high-end pens that sell for more money, in some cases several hundred of dollars.

Some manufactures feature a thicker layer of 24kt Gold plating. This significantly increases the average life of the item. As 24kt Gold is naturally soft and wears quickly, all pen components have been protested with a educable epoxy layer on top of the gold increasing the wear resistance
